What languages are good to learn if I want a career in biology/psychology?
Question by Kalia: What languages are good to learn if I want a career in biology/psychology?
I’m a college sophmore right now, planning on double majoring in bio + psych. Is there any language that I can easily learn (on my own) that will be useful for a career in this area? A lot of job descriptions say “Bilingualism an asset.”
I live in Canada and learned French when I was a kid, but I only know very basic phrases and don’t know if it’s worth pursuing. So, any advice?

Answer by Chris Chris
Well, it depends. A long time ago, German was the language of science, so every once in a while, especially in psychology, you’ll run into either a phrase or entire article in german.
Otherwise, it depends on what you want to end up doing… if you want to go into research, learning another language is useful for communicating with other members of the science community. If you’re going into psychology, then perhaps spanish or french would be useful to communicate with people who would rather speak their native language than english.

How does a computer science major start out in the career field?
Question by .: How does a computer science major start out in the career field?
I am a senior computer science major, but I have been focusing on school so much that I have yet to find a good job/internship in my career field. In fact, I am not sure where to begin. I feel like my lack of experience and training in a real job will push me out of the possibility of getting a good job.
Any advice?

It help to have some specialized knowledge other than just computer science. When I was a school they recommended have an minor so that you would have specialized knowledge in that field Business math or a science was common minors.

What Questions Should be Considered When Deciding Whether or Not to Pursue a Career in Law?
Question by zeke_reeves: What Questions Should be Considered When Deciding Whether or Not to Pursue a Career in Law?
With the dilemas of supply and demand that the legal profession is currently facing (and thus falls in equilibrium price for legal services), prospective candidates about to start undergraduate training have good reason to “think twice,” as it were, when deciding whether or not to pursue a career in law (or go to law school for that matter).
What questions would you advise students to consider as they decide whether or not to pursue a career in the legal profession?

How does a career in engineering contribute to society?
Question by : How does a career in engineering contribute to society?
Please describe how a career in engineering contributes to society. Thanks!

Answer by Michael M
A short and simple answer is to look around you. Everything (I would say 99%) you see was designed, optimized, or inspired by engineers.
Most of what we take for granted today would not be possible without engineers.
EDIT:
I want to address the answer below, because he is partially (though bias
) correct. There are many many people that are involved in the production of a product. Designers, technicians, manufactures, marketing, Engineering, testing…All of these people play a special role to develop products that benefit society.
So to accurately answer your question, The engineer’s role in this is to 1. Come up with these “goofy” ideas (sometimes)and 2. Ensure that the product will work correctly, perform as intended, and operate in a safe and reliable manner. Point # 2 is primarily what the engineer’s job is. But don’t give us Engineers all the credit, because many many people have their hands on a product and it takes a combined effort from each one to contribute to society.
